Cumberland County’s approval of a 1,200-acre landfill will change the environment forever. Short-term it will introduce a wide variety of problems from noxious odors, to vermin, to safety and traffic issues. Long-term it will cause well water, and both river and stream water contamination, loss of wildlife habitat, human health problems, and reduced property values. Suffice to say leadership in Cumberland County has been presented with facts from constituents and residents to no avail. The landfill has been approved at the county level.

Now it is up to Virginia state officials to make the final determination as to the viability of such a project. Both the Department of Environmental Quality and Virginia Department of Transportation have the final word. There is a public comment period where we all will be heard.

Together we have a good chance of stopping this horrible scourge on our land. By signing the petition that follows you are making a statement that you oppose this landfill for the reasons stated.
