Cumberland County Landfill Alert (CCLA) Files Appeal About the Green Ridge Landfill in Cumberland County, Virginia

Click here to read the appeal.

Cumberland, VA —August 28, 2025 — CCLA, a non-profit group opposing the proposed Green Ridge landfill, filed an appeal against the approval actions taken by the Cumberland County Board of Supervisors on July 28, 2025, regarding conditional use permit (CUP) 24-01 and the Second Amended and Restated Host Agreement.

Reasons for the Appeal

CCLA took this action in our efforts to protect our environment by not allowing the destruction the landfill would cause to our rural way of life, our health, our water safety, and traffic concerns, not only for the residents of Cumberland County, but for all of Virginia.

CCLA Will Continue to Oppose the Proposed Landfill

CCLA continues to fight the proposed Green Ridge landfill, and after over 7 years, we are not about to give up. At this point, Green Ridge is basically starting over with the approval of CUP 24-01 and the Second Amended and Restated Host Agreement. There was only a 30-day period to appeal the Board’s decision and CCLA met that requirement.

It is worthy to note, Green Ridge did not meet the conditions of CUP 18-06 approved by the Board in June 2018, which had an expiration date of 7 years from the date of approval. The terms of the Amended and Restated Host Agreement approved in July 2019 were not met. In addition, Green Ridge was unable to obtain the necessary approval for permits from state and federal agencies to construct the proposed landfill according to the plans presented in 2018.

CCLA

CCLA was founded in July 2018 when a group of concerned citizens met in opposition to the proposed Green Ridge landfill in Cumberland County, right on the border with Powhatan County. Since that time, the organization has grown and now has many supporters. We are thankful for every one of them, as our organization is surviving totally on donations, financial and otherwise.

CCLA is well recognized as a viable organization locally and otherwise.
